Choosing the correct safety footwear is about more than the toe cap. The markings below explain protection against penetration, water, slipping, heat, cold and other workplace hazards.
Safety footwear categories — EN ISO 20345:2022
The category codes are cumulative. For example, S3 includes the S2 features plus penetration resistance and a cleated outsole. The letters P, PL and PS identify different penetration-resistant inserts and test-nail sizes.
Basic safety protection
- 200-joule protective toe cap.
- Meets the basic requirements for safety footwear.
Basic protection + P
- SB protection.
- Metallic penetration-resistant midsole (P).
Basic protection + PL
- SB protection.
- Non-metallic penetration-resistant insert tested with a 4.5 mm nail (PL).
Basic protection + PS
- SB protection.
- Non-metallic penetration-resistant insert tested with a 3.0 mm nail (PS).
Dry-workplace protection
- 200-joule toe cap.
- Closed heel area.
- Antistatic protection.
- Energy absorption in the heel.
S1 + metallic midsole
- All S1 features.
- Metallic penetration-resistant midsole (P).
S1 + PL insert
- All S1 features.
- Non-metallic penetration-resistant insert tested with a 4.5 mm nail (PL).
S1 + PS insert
- All S1 features.
- Non-metallic penetration-resistant insert tested with a 3.0 mm nail (PS).
S1 + water-resistant upper
- All S1 features.
- Upper tested for water penetration and absorption (WPA).
S2 + metallic midsole
- All S2 features.
- Metallic penetration-resistant midsole (P).
- Cleated outsole.
S2 + PL insert
- All S2 features.
- Non-metallic penetration-resistant insert tested with a 4.5 mm nail (PL).
- Cleated outsole.
S2 + PS insert
- All S2 features.

Waterproof polymer/rubber footwear

- All-rubber or all-polymeric construction.
- Antistatic protection.

S4 + metallic midsole
- All S4 features.
- Metallic penetration-resistant midsole (P).

S4 + PL insert
- All S4 features.
- Non-metallic penetration-resistant insert tested with a 4.5 mm nail (PL).

S2 + whole-footwear water resistance
- All S2 features.
- Whole footwear tested for water resistance (WR).

Additional protection markings
Slip-resistance markings
SR is the current marking used with the 2022 standard. SRA, SRB and SRC may still appear on footwear certified to the earlier 2011 standard.
Current slip-resistance marking under EN ISO 20345:2022. Tested on ceramic tile with glycerine.
Legacy EN ISO 20345:2011 test on ceramic tile with detergent solution; minimum coefficient of friction 0.32 flat and 0.28 at the heel.
Legacy EN ISO 20345:2011 test on steel with glycerol; minimum coefficient of friction 0.18 flat and 0.13 at the heel.
Legacy marking confirming that both the SRA and SRB tests were met.
